I've always just run them directly from Postfix as a milter.

I've never really thought about this. How much of an advantage is it
running SpamAssassin and ClamAV via Amavis, rather than just running
them directly as a milter within Postfix? I'm wondering whether it would
be worthwhile adding Amavis as well.
