10 years ago, IPv6 implementation was driven by the concern that everyone was going to suffer from unavailable IP addresses. SMTPUTF8 is a usability upgrade for non-ASCII email addresses (localparts and domains). 10 Years from now I expect that most email products will support internationalized email addresses (whether specified by SMTPUTF8 or some later standard).
