What about:
submission service - pre/post-queue filter -\ /- outbound SMTP
-- queue --
mx service - pre/post-queue filter -/ \- dovecot
(best viewed in fixed-width font).
Each component of this picture can be replicated as many times as
needed. That is, multiple filters can share the same queue, or
each filter can send to a dedicated queue.
