Hi
I am newbie into mail and mTA setup.
I have my port 465 smtps/587 (submission) working, so do i need to
keep port 25 open?
I am asking this because when i try to telnet gmail then it does not
work, so was wondering if blocking port 25 will stop all my incoming
mails or not?
To try it out i did telnet gmail like below
telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25
it just said trying and did not work
Then i sent a mail from gmail to my mail ID after blocking port 25 and
I did not receive the mail, dont know where it went :(
Will be good to know about my questions from experts.
Regards
Jithesh
You don't need to open port 25. Port 25 is for sending, not receiving
mail. Many administrators consider Port 25 a security risk and block it
to prevent having their system exploited.
You can use port 587 for sending rather than Port 25. Some
administrators open port 25 so that their clients can use it for sending
email (not receiving). You wouldn't have to do this (have port 25
opened) if you tell the people who have accounts on your server and will
be using your server for sending email.
All you have to do is tell put in a setup link for your clients to use,
telling them to use port 587 for sending email. This won't affect the
rest of the world sending email to you.
I don't understand what happened to prevent you from receiving email
when you had it closed. I'll hope you will test it again and give more
details of the test.
