I had hoped that some variant of the available sequential lookups through 
multiple sources might do the trick; seems not.

Then I'll drop the 'elegant' recipient verification, and move to periodically 
rsync'd users.lmdb tables, plus an exec hook on the backend whenever a 
user/alias is changed.   Solves the problem well enough to get message into the 
frontend's queue if the backend is down any length of time.

I managed to get that exactly backwards.
