Postfix doesn't appear to do alias resolution on the REDIRECT'ed
address. Do I need to add something to a setting that controls
lookups on redirects?

REDIRECT addresses are currently not subject to "before queue"
address rewriting. There exists no code do do that.

This is a real problem that means redirect addresses can't be everything
a normal envelope recipient can be. In my case, the redirected address
is a role. It must be resolved to real recipients for delivery.

Would it be a lot of effort to not treat redirect addresses differently
in this regard?

That would require major surgery.

Ok.

Since you are willing to replace your Postfix installation, I suggest
that you replace it with a version that supports smtp_command_filter.
That feature can replace the entire RCPT TO command as outlined in
my earlier response.

I'm already running 2.11. As for smtp_command_filter, I couldn't find it. I did find smtpd_command_filter, though. If I don't follow-up this thread, it worked (or I failed a beer truck test).
