I can't answer that, but maybe you missed a quirk of how the loopback
interface is (usually?) configured on Linux: with all of 127/8. Loopback
connections use whichever address in the loopback block one chooses on
both ends. I'm not certain of it, but I believe that if you specify the
interfaces listened on by IP, a program told to listen to 127.0.0.1
won't be listening on other loopback addresses.
This is not true on all Unix-like OS's.
