Yes s**t does happen lol. I've had delivery issues in the past, they always respond with 421 or some type of error code, not time outs, but here's what I am seeing in some tests:
If it starts timing out, every single message does, I have a multiple ip set up and it happens across the board on every ip. Once it happens, the deferral queue fills up with around 500-1000 messages, if I restart postfix it still doesn't work. If I clear the deferral queue, and do NOT restart postfix, it still times out. But if I clear the deferral queue and then restart postfix, 250 response codes down the line. After a little time, a few messages go in to the deferral queue and I start getting these time outs again. I repeated the above about 5 times and each time same results.
