According the explanation of all the parameters for main.cf virtual_mailbox_domains defaults to $virtual_mail_box maps. so I am thinking that I can drop that line in main.cf and move many of the elements in virtual_alias_domains and virtual_alias_maps directly into /etc/postfix/virtual
Whoops that should have read

With no comments from this list to help, I have been trying to take this further on my own. I have built a virtual machine (badger.home) and installed a version of dovecot and postfix on it that is similar but cut down version of my main server.

Here is my main.cf file

I have deliberately commented out transport_maps in case it was getting in the way - it is only there to handle mail to ham.ham and spam.spam with dspam (not in this test config)

I then set a mail (from 192.168.0.12 - one of the machines in the debug peer list - also known as kanga.home) from a...@badger.home to r...@badger.home, in the hope that from the virtual mail box map that it would appear as alan+root at the dovecot interface.

Here is the contents of the log file created. I have included all lines, but I have broken it up and inserted some text where I don't quite understand what the output is telling me.

This is using the word recipient with a value of a...@badger.home - has it already resolved r...@badger.home, or is this something to do with resolving the sender address?

So its looking in the maps - there are no canonical_maps

So I understand its looking in virtual_alias_maps and is not there

But why isn't it looking in virtual_mailbox_maps?
