With gmail at least, periods in the username field are non-significant. All of 
these email addresses are identical to google:

t...@gamil.com
t....@gmail.com
t.e....@gmail.com
te...@gmail.com

You would be safe on the web form discarding any entry for a gmail address that 
uses a period in the username portion.
