Hi all,

Not sure why this is, but it has been bugging me for a long time...

All of our Windows XP client hostnames show up properly, e.g.:

Sep 13 10:27:39 mailhost postfix-587/smtpd[16373]: 4371BA7D5ED: client=validhost1.example.com[192.168.1.54], sasl_method=PLAIN, sasl_username=validu...@example.com

nslookup shows:

mailhost : Thu Sep 13, 10:28:07 : ~
 # nslookup 192.168.1.54
Server: 192.168.1.160
Address: 192.168.1.160#53

54.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa name = validhost1.example.com.

and

mailhost : Thu Sep 13, 10:28:35 : ~
 # host 192.168.1.54
54.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer validhost1.example.com.

We recently started rolling out Win7 boxes (a year or so ago, but doing it slowly), and for some reason, Windows 7 clients don't show the hostname, only 'unknown':

Sep 13 10:46:09 mailhost postfix-587/smtpd[16228]: C2B50A7D5B0: client=unknown[192.168.2.33], sasl_method=PLAIN, sasl_username=validu...@example.com

nslookup shows:

mailhost : Thu Sep 13, 10:47:54 : ~
 # nslookup 192.168.2.33
Server: 192.168.1.160
Address: 192.168.1.160#53

33.2.168.192.in-addr.arpa name = validhost2.example.com.

and

mailhost : Thu Sep 13, 10:48:05 : ~
 # host 192.168.2.33
33.2.168.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer validhost2.example.com.

Yes these two are on different subnets, but it is the same for Win7 clients that are on the same subnet.

Anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it? I don't guess it is a real problem, but I don't like 'unknowns'... ;)

Thanks for any suggestions...

Charles
