I already thanked Michael for his contributions in private email. Michael, does editing master.cf and s/fifo/unix/ solve the mtime file system updates problem? This is already supported by existing code, works on Linux and *BSD, and I can make a config parameter that makes this configurable with system-dependent defaults.
If so, then we can avoid controversial changes, such as support to
mount over a critical Postfix directory without Postfix's knowledge
of such things happening.
