some clients prefer PLAIN, some clients prefer LOGIN. They're both plain-text equivalent (encoded, not encrypted). cram-md5 sends the password encrypted, the message is still sent in the clear unless you use TLS. Google for all the hairy details. But really, you should use TLS.
