For a variety of reasons, this isn't an option for us.

Well, high volume is maybe overstating it. I would guess a few hundred outgoing 
emails a day, mostly to different people. Our current Server Admin Mail server 
in 10.6 Server works great. Just gotta to do the same with Postfix at the 
command-line.
