This is a result of your limited background and education Peter. The term "server" was used to describe a software program's role long before hardware companies adopted the word "server" to describe a class of machines. Many RFCs were written before the latter above occurred. When the first RFCs were written the IBM PC hadn't been invented, nor the Apple II, nor Commodore 64. In those days machines were called "mainframes" and "minicomputers". There was no such thing as a "server" in the hardware sense. Then, and now, "server" describes a software program's role more often than it describes a physical machine. -- Stan
