Running FC5 Postfix 2.1.5, Qpopper 4.x

    QUESTION:

Is there a way to set a mail server to only open one connection
to another, and send all mail over that one connection keeping it alive?

     SETUP

We have two incoming mail servers which are the MX records for our
many domains called mail0.lightlink.com and mail1.lightlink.com.

Incoming mail is filtered by postgrey, reforwarded back out into
the world, and what's left is delivered to our local pop server called
pop.lightlink.com.

QPopper is SLOW, and presumably we are moving to dovecot in the
near future. It is a dual Xeon 4 Gig machine.

However in the meanwhile the contention between pop requests and
incoming smtpd connections for disk I/O is driving the load high, 30 or
more during the 9am to 11am mail rush.

I have niced the poppers and the postfix which has stabilized it a bit.

But since pop.lightlink.com can ONLY receive mail from
mail0 and mail1, can I or should I limit this connection to
one or very few concurrent smtp/smtpd connections. Presently
it seems that mail comes in bursts and 50 or more smtpd's are
opened on the pop server driving the load high with the poppers
that are doing the same.

When the burstiness of both get in sync, the machine just stops.

Thanks in advance to the wonderful people to saved me from sendmail.
