Creating the subdirectory manually and having it owned by vmail:vmail
solved the problem. What I'm wondering is, isn't postfix/virtual(8)
 able to create subdirectories?

/var/mail/vhosts must exist. Postfix will create subdirectories for
 virtual users therein.

I had changed the location, made it /srv/mail/, had it owned by
vmail:vmail, chmod'd 700 and it still said permission error. When I
manually created the domain folder and had it owned by vmail:vmail and
chmod'd 700, only then it worked.
