it is because a package is more than simple files

only on debian because the are flicking on old versions instead making
updates, if i make a newer version as in the distribution is newer
some weeks later their package will be installed and that is why
you should EVER make clean packages instead having old postfix from
the distri because dependencies and install another one somewhere
in the filesystem

if you make your own packages you have to make security ipdates
on your own usually, the reason for apckage-managment is not only
for this, without ANY problem you can rebuild postfix 2.8.2
for Fedora 13 and update the RPM over the 2.7.2 in a clean way
and so the migration question does not exist
