Everyone, Thank you for your help. I found the culprit. I was missing the line:
auth_mechanisms = plain login in my dovecot.conf file. Everything works now. Thank you so much for all your help, especially Matt Hayes for making me realize that dovecot and not postfix was handling the authorization. Thanks again, Mark Moellering
