Hi there,

Even after reading documentation, I am unclear on these two options:
tls/ssl or starttls. And what does it mean as to port# that client
should use to connect to?

The confusion comes when I set up a mail client (e.g., Thunderbird). I
see these two options for both incoming and outgoing SMTP server.
Depends on whether I specify startls or tls/ssl, the port# client
connects to the server is different.

On the incoming server, I use POP. If it is over TLS/SSL, it is 995
(secure POP). But if it is STARTTLS, it is 110 (default POP), is it
still TLS/SSL enabled?

Why is that? Which one should I use: starttls or tls/ssl for secure
connections?

I thought enabling "starttls" indicates that client and server will
announce they support TLS before any AUTH data is sent over. But is
subsequent communication secure?
And, if I simply enable "tls/ssl", does that mean AUTH data is sent in
plain text but any subsequent communication is secure?

Thanks,
Yan
