no, the failing policy services are in main.cf, not master.cf I fixed the problem by adding etc/hosts under /var/spool/postfix. "man smtpd" doesn't say the postfix is automatically always chrooted, only: SECURITY The SMTP server is moderately security-sensitive. It talks to SMTP clients and to DNS servers on the network. The SMTP server __can be__ run chrooted at fixed low privilege. First time I've ever seen postfix not use /etc/hosts, but I expect something else is misconfigured. Len
