So what is the alternative to vacation for Postfix?

I compiled vacation on my linux box and enable my .forward file with
\user1, "|/usr/bin/vacation user1" but the sender doesn't get a

binary is there:
By design, vacation does NOT send mail for EVERY email received.
It also does not respond to mailing lists etc. In fact it won't
reply unless the user is listed as a recipient.
