This exactly what I want to avoid because it would involve amending 
the configuration on the central mail server each time a new host is 
added the network.

What do you suggest as a generic solution? I could imagine rewriting
"recipi...@subdomain.example.com" to "recipi...@example.com".
I would have to use some sort of wildcard for /subdomain./, but I suspect 
that this would not be the best solution.
