Ok. This is what's happening. With Amavis disabled on the sender's 
reply-address mail server - the following reject message gets through:

This is the mail system at host DELETED.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not
be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.

For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.

If you do so, please include this problem report. You can
delete your own text from the attached returned message.

however with Amavis enabled the above message does not turn up in the sender's 
email box, thus they have no way of knowing the recipient's mailbox is full.
