The exact byte count also depends on what form the message is in.

UNIX uses newline-separated text, while SMTP uses <CR><LF>, adding
one byte to each line.  Postfix internally stores message text as
typed records with an explicit length, which use about the same
amount of storage as SMTP. This difference alone can easily expand
UNIX text files by a few percent.
