As stated, it's a Debian customisation. For the record: man 5 mailname: "The file contains only one line describing the fully qualified domain name that the program wishing to get the mail name should use" As commented in main.cf, /etc/mailname is used for $myorigin http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#myorigin
