If you want to send messages with rich content, YOU need to provide MIME-Version, Content-Type, and Content-Transfer-Encoding headers. It makes no sense for smtp-source to provide 1/3 of this information. To send pre-formatted messages you can use the -F option, as documented. -F file Send the pre-formatted message header and body in the specified file, while prepending '.' before lines that begin with '.', and while appending CRLF after each line.
