well, partly because it was a VERY old configuration,

partly because I also upgraded amavisd-new, spamassassin and such - which require different "wiring" in master.cf

and partly because I didn't realize I could (I believe the technical term is "Doh" - accompanied by the sound of my hand hitting my forhead) -- sort of what happens after a string of sleepless nights, rebuilding a machine, after what was supposed to be a RAID array died and took my o/s with it (luckily data was ok)
