There's nothing inherently wrong with that. Here is what I see on my
Gentoo servers:

  ❯ postconf shlib_directory
  shlib_directory = /usr/lib64/postfix/${mail_version}
  ❯ postconf mail_version
  mail_version = 3.9

If it did not work on your machine, perhaps you forgot to run the usual
"dispatch-conf" after the update?
