Indeed those multiples of 5s sure feel like DNS lookup delays. Unclear
why this would correlated with enabling TLS connection reuse, I'd
conjecture that's not the case, and that similar delays would also be
seen for non-TLS connections to the same destination.
It is also unclear whether the delays are the OP's systems looking up
Google's addresses, or Google's systems looking up the OP's reverse and
forward DNS, though when I query Quad8 DNS for the OP's MTA, the
response is prompt.
