i'm trying to set up a mail server using postfix. i currently have a
squarespace domain and are using mailutils to send the email. do i
need to
set up some kinda dns record? thanks bye
You will need a hosting/connectivity provider who can allocate you an
IPv4 address with no reputation problems, multiple DNS records depending
on how robust your sending needs to be, a solid understanding of SMTP, a
basic understanding of Unix/Linux system administration, a local caching
fully recursive, DNSSEC-validating DNS resolver. You will need to learn
about mail authentication using SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and deploy tools on
your server to support them.
There are people who will tell you in all sincerity, hoping to save you
from yourself, that it isn't feasible for an individual without a deep
technical background to stand up a new mail server just for their own
small domain. They are not wrong. I know excellent mail admins who have
given up self-hosting in the past few years because of the ever-growing
difficulty of delivering mail normally to the behemoth mailbox providers
and other frustrations. I will not tell you to give up but you should
understand that it is far more difficult to do this today than it was a
decade or two ago. Most people can be better served by a good
experienced mail provider than by their own efforts.
