That is incorrect. Read the aBNF definitions more carefully. 
Specifically the items related to folding white space.
More generally, parsing of dates in Unix-like environments should always 
be prepared for other programs using %e where %d would be more 
code-friendly. E.g. syslog-generated log files do that.
