It can be either, as documented here under "Result Format".

# performs MX lookup
example.com      smtp:filtering-service.com

# suppresses lookup, attempts to resolve the hostname directly
example.com      smtp:[mx01.filtering-service.com]

You probably want the first one, they could change the DNS without warning.
