does this not have a built-in azalia?  I wonder if "ASUS Crystal
Sound" is active ... although that sounds like it's only for
recording, and probably only for the built-in device.  first time
I ever heard of such a thing.  I ask about azalia because it will
probably be the better choice in the long term, offering more
playback channels to allow multichannel/multistreaming.  right now
emu is probably easier to work with ...

my gut reaction is 5 secs is too long of an interval for problems
directly related to audio, unless you are using a huge buffer in
a sound server or something along those lines.  I suppose though
it could be that something is just slightly off and adds up over
time ...
