I convert AAC to FLAC as I use a Receiver and it can't handle AAC
obviously. I've never noticed a slowdown or pitch shift problem. I think
the issue is PCM has nothing to indicate the sample rate so the playback
devices can't switch to the 48KHz clock. FLAC on the other hand has
metadata and can signal 48KHz so handles this fine.

Is there any reason you can't use FLAC? It's lossless just the same as
PCM so will sound identical, with the added bonus of a reduction in
network traffic (which may matter with wifi). On the other hand
re-encode to FLAC does use more server cpu so I can see it might be a
problem on low powered servers.
