Thanks, bpa, for your fast response. I thought it was probably a
processor speed problem, but I would then have expected the lower rate
streams to be audibly less worse. I guess it is time to replace the
Shiva Plug with a Raspberry Pi. 

About the mp3 streams from Radio Feeds UK and Ireland, what quality do
they provide?
