Question: Spicefly users please tell me what version you are using?

- V1.x *original flavour*
- v2.x *Friends of Spicefly*
- v3.x *Friends of Spicefly*
- v4.x *New Licence Plugin Model*

Sorry if this post is a bit off topic, just wanted to respond to
reniera, I don't plan to continue the discussion in this thread after
this post.

Just to defend myself a bit, all old versions of my plugins are still
available for download from my download page and can be installed
manually, so there is definitely a way back if someone wants that for my
plugins.

The two things I personally found important when introducing the
commercial concept for my own plugins was:
1. Keep them as open source so anyone that wants to provide a modified
version will able to do so in case they feel they can do a better job
than I do or just want to introduce functionality which I don't want to
introduce.
2. Make it possible to manually download and install the old versions if
you don't want the latest commercial version which is officially
supported.

Which is generally a good idea, I also have it disabled, I even
suggested to Logitech that it should be turned off by default when auto
upgrade was initially introduced. In my case I have it disabled because
I want to have full control when an upgrade happens to ensure that I
don't accidentally break the system just before I want to use the system
for music listening.

However, I can also understand that most people just don't want to care
about software upgrades, they want it to happen automatically in the
background without having to do anything and in this case the auto
upgrade feature is a great addition.

Happy waiting, I've waited since beginning of 2006 and even offered to
do the work for them so they can include it in the core product, still
it's not there yet.
As you know, I agree with you 110% that rating/statistics should be part
of the standard product.

I guess I can be considered to be the market then, since I've already
provided an alternative through my plugins, and you can even continue to
use your beloved Squeezebox hardware instead of being forced to replace
all of them with hardware done by someone else than Logitech.

I'm not as positive as you are regarding this because neither Logitech
nor Sonos seems to think that ratings, statistics and smart playlists
are something the market is interested in. I think our best hope is that
either some new vendor does something or Apple or Google does it since
they might want ratings to be displayed in their music stores to make
people get a better music purchasing experience. Unfortunately neither
Apple nor Google is anywhere near to provide a whole house audio system,
they are great for a single room audio solution but not for the whole
house.

If you don't want any new development I agree with you 100% that you
shouldn't spend money to support developers to do work you don't think
is needed.

My personal feeling is that most useful functionality during the last
years has come from third party developers (not from Logitech), but I
completely understand if that's not the case for people who mainly want
the system to offer basic functionality. If you don't want extras from
third party developers, there is of course no need to support them, I
was just trying to say that people who like third party add-ons should
consider supporting them if they want them to exist also in the future.

I'm sure maintenance could be covered by donations if everyone reasoned
like you do, unfortunately most people selects to not provide a donation
if it's voluntary, which results in too few donations which results in
that donations doesn't even cover the effort to maintain the plugins.
