As SamY states the plugin does not compensate for the double reduction going on when both the receiver and the player are reducing the volume. I am not sure I ever considered trying to match the outputs.
I did run three experiments: * Version 4.1 with the player set to 100% * Version 4.1 with the player set to variable * Version 1.92 with the player set to variable. In all cases I set the player volume to 80% and the corresponding command to the AVP was 625 (or 62.5). In my setup that represented a -17.5 because my max is -10. As SamY stated we really only care about sending a pure digital, uncompromised signal to the amp. I just left the other one in play incase someone wanted it or could not support a digital signal.
