Don't worry about my skills - I'll survive. So...

Code:
--------------------
    birgit@bw-tp-w520:~$ which alsa
  /sbin/alsa

--------------------
and the entire zoo of sound card conf files is available under
/usr/share/alsa/cards/.

I've change pulseaudio's configuration such that I can kill the process
with pulseaudio -k (basically i.e. switching autospawn off - right?).
Rhythmbox doesn't require pulse apparently (happily playing music w/o a
pulseaudio process/deamon running).

As I wrote earlier I am able to record and play music files
"aplay/arecord".

I know about su but Ubuntu is actually obsessed with sudo. The root in
Ubuntu doesn't have a passwd, neither has squeezeserver (the user). I
could issue

Code:
--------------------
    su squeezeserver -c {program name goes here}
--------------------
but that doesn't help with LMS unless I'm mistaken.

At least I learn something here  - txs again for your support
