The level of debug is set in the plugin setting page and here you'll find as well the path where logs are stored (one per player instance). The server.log will also tell you probably why the connection fails (probably an encryption problem). Re the perl installation, it's probably linked with perl sigtrap but I'm not a perl system expert so I can't tell, sorry
