raspi-config gives you the option to wait for the network when booting up. This results in the correct mac address being passed to the server, and obviates the need for using the -m command line parameter in the squeezelite configuration file.
Thanks for your help and comments; this is a better solution to the problem than having to configure squeezelite with the mac address. I suppose you could also make the case that the server's behavior in the face of zeros for mac address isn't very robust. Since it has a correct ip address it's not clear to me why it even needs to use the mac address as an identifier for the player. Anyone know?
