Sorry, not /etc/default/default; /etc/default/squeezelite is the correct
filename.

This last answer makes sense. The pi OS I'm using is raspbian, a
debian-based os (sorry for leaving that info out), and thus subject to
the issue described in Marco's reply. This also rang a bell: in
raspi-config one of the configuration items is "3 Boot Options" and one
of the options is "B2 Wait for Network at Boot". I will try to select
that option, to see if the mac address gets the right treatment. I'll
report back.
