If you decide, to compile here is a link i found simple but you may disagree. Mac is right upgrading the kernel entails recompiling the loadable modules. upgrading the kernel via yum or rpm you could check for the dependency(more or less) but you're not getting the bigger picture. Good luck! The last time i recompiled and upgraded my kernel man, i had 2 days of headache.
