If you decide, to compile here is a link i found simple but you may
disagree. Mac is right upgrading the kernel entails recompiling the loadable
modules.  And you should have listed them before hand and read a lot of
kernel-how-to like this one.

upgrading the kernel via yum or rpm you could check for the dependency(more
or less) but you're not getting the bigger picture.

Good luck! The last time i recompiled and upgraded my kernel man, i had 2
days of headache.
