if those machines are still running services that are vulnerable
then it wouldn't matter if it is joined or not. but if the domain
server is also serving as the antivir / security update repository
which can only be accessed via the domain, then those machines
are missing a lot.

this is off-topic. i thought you're asking if it is more secure to
use a FOSS alternative (which is a flamebait). :)
