Spurred by the other thread here about VoIP, I tried skype today. I went ahead and downloaded the binary, unpacked it, and run it. I created an account and found a friend to test it with. Now everything was smooth until I tried dialling.
I will hear a ring. And then as soon as my friend picks it up, the xterm will display this:
read error, res = -1 , handle = 23
/dev/dsp-1: Device or resource busy
My soundcard is working, my microphone is also working. I am a member of the audio group (so that i have r-w access to /dev/dsp). Even as root, this is still what I get.
I googled on this and it looks like it was a problem with other distros as well. The skype website FAQ just offers how to make sure your soundcard is configured correctly. I even tried their tip
$artsdsp -m ./skype
but it segfaulted as soon as my friend picked it up.
So, the million-peso question is, has anybody broken this spell yet with Skype?
