As you boot you will get grub i.e is the bootloader screen.
select the OS  .
press "a" on keyboard( sometimes "e" i.e edit)
Then select the line with your kernel...kernel-2.6.blah
and at its end type "linux 3"
All this typing without the quotes.
Then press "b"
This should boot the selected kernel.
This will be a all text.
you will get a text login.
Login as root
then you may type " startx "
or
readup on configuring a xorg.conf file for your particular
lappy(Google naturally). All this before you do above.
