Nope, that's not the only reason.
You missed the fact that there's volunteers who have fun doing this, for
some value of "fun" anyway, and then there's people whose job entails
keeping package X in shape and who helpfully share their work with the
community, if nothing else because long-term it's less effort than doing
it all yourself.
Acknowledging the employer, sponsor, or whatever-you-name-them of such
work is something *I* call "common courtesy", esp. since there are no
immediate tangible advantages for doing so.
