Not if he puts it in "" quotes, as I wrote earlier:
systemctl status "$device"
Of course you need to be aware of shell doing any expansion itself, the
quotes avoid that.
systemctl status
"dev-serial-by\x2dpath-pci\x2d0000:00:1d.1\x2dusb\x2d0:2:1.0\x2dport0.device"
should work.
Since I'm not seeing a convincing argument for breaking that, I'm
closing this bug report.
Even if ugly, I think the journal log should reflect the actual name of
the object that is used internally by systemd.
