Ithe exact same steps really succeed with the -extra package installed, then I guess it has nothing to do with the h264 video encoder itself, but with the audio codec used for that profile. The -extra packages does include nothing more than 4 additional audio codecs, one of them being vo-aacenc. Is it possible that the profile you selected expects an AAC audio codec but fails to detect libav's own internal encoder?
