This bug was discussed on our mailing list [1]. The problem was that vlc was configured to use the alsa output plugin. The solution is to install vlc-plugin-pulse and to use the Pulseaudio output plugin (Tools -> Preferences -> Audio -> Output module: Pulseaudio audio output).
